(This stone is shaped like a book. On the side is written "Drama and Speech")
From James H Boatner:
"Celand and I were members of a Navy Band aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise during World War II. Celand was very slight of stature. He had a light voice with a strong New England accent. According to him he was raised by two maiden aunts. Normally a Navy musician played more than one instrument. Celand played what was called a peck horn in military band music. His other instrument may have been the piano. The band played mostly big band dance music in which he did not participate. Celand came aboard the Enterprise when it was under repair in Bremerton, Washington in the fall of 1943 and was transferred with the rest of the band to Washington D.C. in December of 1944. There the band was dismantled and the members were disbursed individually to other assignments. Photos of the band are on the Enterprise's web site www.CV6.org and on the Navy Musician's Association's website www.navymusicians.org. the latter also includes a recording made by the band while in Bremerton. Celand was a very distinctive person of high intelligence and a great personality of whom I thought would acquire great prominence after the war."
Note: Floyd graduated from Colby College, Waterville, Maine in 1952 and received his Masters (Dept. of Speech and Drama) from Stanford University in 1958.
